AB OBJECTIVE: To describe the pattern of HIV antibody testing and newly
diagnosed HIV infection among people seen at public sexually
transmissible disease (STD) clinics in Australia. METHODS: Each quarter,
six STD clinics forwarded tabulations of the number of people seen, the
number of people tested for HIV antibody and the number of people newly
diagnosed with HIV infection, broken down by sex, age group, HIV risk
group and HIV antibody testing history. RESULTS: During 1992, 21,538 men
and 12,003 women were seen. 88% of men who reported homosexual contact
were retested following a prior negative test. Of 17 cases of newly
diagnosed HIV infection among homosexual men, 47% occurred within one
year of the previous negative test. Four cases of infection were
diagnosed among 8,138 men reporting only heterosexual contact within
Australia. No infections were identified among women who reported
heterosexual contact. CONCLUSION: Among people at increased risk for HIV
infection, few cases of infection have occurred among those reporting
only heterosexual contact. Cases of newly acquired infection continue to
occur among men who report homosexual contact.
